I’ve been reading Arthur C. Brooks’ amazing book Build the Life You Want and it reminded me again of the importance of living more mindfully.
Lately, I’ve been working on this—trying not to let my mind race toward what’s next, but instead to simply be present. To notice the sounds and sites around me, the feel of the breeze, and my place in the moment.
The truth is, I’ve always been so future-minded that I sometimes miss what’s right in front of me. Maybe that’s why some memories feel blurry—because I wasn’t fully there when they happened.
I tried it again this morning on my walk and the result was striking—I felt much more peace and less tenseness than when I’m caught up planning what’s ahead or ruminating on past issues.
Mindfulness doesn’t mean ignoring the past or not planning for the future. It means practicing presence as a default mode—truly experiencing life as it unfolds.
“Mindfulness should work instead toward a sense of yourself as part of the wider world, and an observation of your emotions without judgment.” – Albert C Brooks
Just offering this thought up for your consideration and seeing if you might try it this weekend. If so, let me know what you experienced.
